When Should A Toddler Give Up A Pacifier
| Most babies and toddler feel comfortable when they suck on their thumb, a pacifier, or other objects. It is a natural behavior for young toddler. Your child should be about four to six weeks old before using a pacifier, especially if you are breastfeeding your child. So you can breastfeed effectively. |
Your baby should not form self-comforting behavior of sucking with a pacifier. Some parents hand their baby pacifiers to their babies every time when they start crying. That’s not right parenting, because baby will start depending on the pacifier to stop crying. Instead of hand a pacifier to the baby, it is much better to comfort your baby by holding it. Furthermore, you should not allow your baby to form a habit of falling asleep with a pacifier. Otherwise, if the pacifier falls out of its mouth when it wakes up, your baby may not stop crying.
You should start restricting the use of pacifier after sixth months of age. Only allow the baby to use pacifier when it is in the crib. From six to nine months old, you should discourage your toddlers from sucking on pacifier or their thumb. However, many babies will continue to suck on other objects until they are around three years old.
If your children turns three years of age and still do not stop sucking on their thumbs, you should take action to stop this habit. Sucking on thumb can increase the risk of ear infection, lower communication skills, and decelerate other oral developments.
