Fertility Problems And Smoking

We all know that smoking can cause a lot of diseases related to the heart, lungs and blood vessels. However, not many people know that fertility problems and smoking are interlinked. Research has shown that smoking can make it difficult for women to get pregnant or to carry the fetus to the full term.

Nearly all the research done on fertility problems and smoking show that smoking has a negative effect on fertility. In addition, research shows that more fertility problems exist in smokers than non-smokers. Active smoking and passive smoking have also been compared and studies conclude that active smoking has negative effects on fertility while in passive smoking the effects are just marginally less. Women who smoke pose a danger to their ovaries and the degree of danger depends upon the length of smoking and the amount of cigarettes the woman smokes. There is evidence to show that smoking causes the loss of eggs and reduces the reproductive function wherein a woman may experience menopause much earlier than women who do not smoke.

Even men are no immune to smoking as it may cause a reduction in sperm count and sperm mobility. In addition, it has been seen that smokers have more abnormalities in the shape of the sperm. However, researchers agree that the effect of smoking on male fertility is difficult to conduct as there are certain limitations in creating the conditions. However, just the fact that there are studies to prove that smoking reduces the sperm count, it is safe to say that smoking also affects male fertility negatively.
