Menopause Cancer And Womens Health Fertility

As women approach menopause, they can have a lot of health related issues and illnesses that could lead to fertility problems. For example, if a woman who is close to menopause suffers from cancer and she undergoes chemotherapy, the treatment will adversely affect her fertility.

With chemotherapy, the ovaries either stop working temporarily or permanently. This depends on the type of drugs used and the dosage of the drugs. There is ample evidence to support that certain chemotherapy drugs can cause infertility in women compared to others.

Permanent infertility is more common in women who are older, especially those who are reaching the age of menopause. Again, the fertility issue is also dependent on the dosage of drugs and women who require higher dosage tend to become permanently infertile. Women who become permanently infertile, wherein the ovaries stop producing eggs permanently, start showing signs of menopause and end up suffering from the symptoms related to menopause.

For women who enter menopause because of chemotherapy, the doctors end up prescribing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to ease the symptoms of menopause. However, HRT is prescribed based on the type of cancer and its treatment. HRT is always started after the chemotherapy.

For those women who are undergoing cancer treatment and the infertility problem is temporary, they will notice that they do not menstruate during the treatment process. However, even then these women's ovaries might be producing eggs and they could get pregnant. Getting pregnant during chemotherapy is harmful for the fetus and proper contraception should be used.
